Abu Dhabi: Sulphur handling terminal for Takreer in Ruwais

At 240 km west of Abu Dhabi, the Ruwais industrial complex is one of the major economic development sites in the Emirates.
Serving the downstream requirements of the Emirates' oil and gas industry, a refinery complex has been operating in Ruwais for the past 25 years.
In the course of time, facilities were expanded with a liquid gas fractionation plant, a fertilizer plant, a sulphur handling terminal, etc.
It is expected that the planned expansion of upstream units will result in substantial increases in sulphur production by the year 2008, hence requiring additional port facilities.

The Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company Takreer has awarded this port expansion contract to Dredging International.
The Belgian company was selected after a long and severe international tendering procedure.
The dredging works call for deepening to minus 15 metres of the approach channel and a new turning basin.
The berth area will be adapted for Panamax size bulk carriers.

A total of 3.6 million m3 of hard rock material will have to be dredged, and pumped ashore over a distance of up to 6.5 km.
The work starts immediately, and needs to be finished in 14 months time.
Interim milestones of six months for the berth area have been set.
Dredging International will assign the heavy duty rock dredger Al Mahaar, which is owned and operated by its Middle East affiliated company Qatar Dredging Company (QDC), a joint venture of Dredging International, the state of Qatar and Qatari based United Development Company (UDC).
